Calgary Transit iPhone app is available now!

It’s been over a year in the making, but we’re proud to finally announce Next Stop – an app for your iPhone or iPod touch that makes getting your bus and train times easy. We’re releasing the app at a meager 99ยข, but plan on upping the price to $1.99 in the future when we add GPS stop lookup, and a reminder alert system. If you purchase now, you’ll be able to upgrade to the new version for free!

If you would like to read more about the app, check out the main page at calgarytransitschedule.com. If you want to stay on top of updates, like us on facebook and follow us on twitter.

Want a free version of the app? Comment on this article to enter into the draw (be sure to enter your email). Five winners will be randomly selected on December 15th.

Great idea guys! I’ve been wanting this app for a long time. Too bad you don’t have an Android version of the app.

Great news!! I would also love the ability to track if a bus is on time! And possibly have some stats in this. Or mabey a way for Calgary Transit to push out delays on our routes if we subscribe to them via the app. I know this is out of your hands, however I think Calgary Transit should buy/license this technology from you guys and build upon it with features that the end user can use.

Think of the ability to get snow delays, route changes, and other information from a push down to the end user… I dream!

    Great work! Congrats!

Was sad I couldn’t see the demo @ democamp but glad I read about it and have been waiting for the release since I got my new iPhone last Monday!

Another win for open source data and eloquent solutions to everyday problems!

@Scott – tracking if a bus is on time? I would also love this but I’m thinking the city won’t be outfitting its bus fleet with GPS anytime soon – maybe mrare knows something about it? That’s the paradox of this, we will know when they are *supposed* to come…

You’ll be pleased to know that CT will be adding GPS into their fleet in the future. We’ll be right on top of the technology as well so we can implement it into Next Stop as soon as possible.

Imagine pulling up a map on your phone and being able to see the bus coming towards you. Coolest.

Great to see the work done on this app!

Is there any way plan of doing routing similar to the Edmonton Transit app?

  7. moh alak    December 13th, 2010 at 09:37pm

Great idea. The gps on the bus is a great new add!

No more having to go out 5 mins early.
No more having to guess were the bus is on snow days!

    @Bryan awesome!!

When can we expect to see this app on other major mobile platforms?

  16. Ben    January 8th, 2011 at 10:53am

Great idea! Any chance of an Android app in the works?

  17. Leigh    January 8th, 2011 at 04:37pm

Right now were staying focused on getting our next version (2.0) out for the iPhone. If there’s enough interest we may look at other platforms in the future but for now were going to evolve the iPhone app to provide the functionality that we had planned on from the beginning (most importantly maps).

If I’m at a location and not sure of the nearest bus stop number can I still find out the bus times at that address? There are times I frequent locations our of the norm so I may not know the bus stop number. This is why the native maps application is so useful. It’s based on address, “Current Location”, and I can even place a pin to arbitrarily travel somewhere. If this app doesn’t have at minimum these capabilities than it improved on nothing for an app that is free and native to the iphone. I just don’t understand the logic. On the plus side this app is graphically appealing and has a simple coherent method of use.

Hey Dave, thanks for your comments. We’re currently working on GPS map functionality that would do exactly what you say – pull up nearby stops for those who aren’t sure where they are. We positioned ourselves not to compete with google maps, because they already do a great job of trip planning. Google maps doesn’t allow you to quickly pull up bus times based on a stop number, so I’m not sure what you mean when you say it improves on nothing as our app has a completely different feature set.

Good, but needs something to show train schedules!

  20. Bryan    February 3rd, 2011 at 10:06am

You can actually look up train times using the corresponding stop number for that train station. Our next update will have a more visual representation of the train stations as well.

I’d love to see this for Blackberry. I would think there would be lots of interest with the amount of transit riders that work downtown and the fact that the majority of company phones are blackberry.
